It seems like over my life time no matter who I speak to about vacations, they speak about how they’ve gained so much weight while on vacation or how they are afraid because they just lost weight and they are going on vacation and don’t want to gain it back. I If your hotel has a gym…be sure to use it!!!I receive tons of email on this subject so I figured I’d share some thoughts with you.

My dad at 84 years old!

My advice, (this is just my advice – it doesn’t make it right or wrong, it’s what works for me) about how to maintain while away while with your family or alone is – If you need to indulge because you are out of your element and/or you simply think you deserve it, then go right ahead. Deprivation doesn’t work for life, it’s just temporary. If you are someone who is just thrown off your routine and it’s hard for you to stick to a new one then read on…but for both, like anything else, put a limit on it. Moderation is always the key to everything in life. When you are traveling with your family, I feel, it is actually easier to stay active.

Here are a few ideas:

(Again, these are what work for me, that doesn’t necessarily mean they will work for you)

■ If you are going away for a week – Eat and drink whatever you want for the first three days then go back to healthy eating. Or eat whatever you want the first two days, eat healthy the next 4 and the last one eat whatever you want again. This can also apply to the kids if they are accustom to eating healthy while at home. Though I’d probably be more lenient with them and give them a treat a day for the rest of the trip.

■ Eat whatever you want throughout your vacation but in moderation and counting calories or paying attention to portion size. This works best for me. Of course, give your kids their healthy portion sizes.

■ Pick a few occasions you will eat whatever you want. This works for everyone.

■ Workout daily, more than usual if you plan on eating more, then you will not feel so bad when you do eat a little more. Do it alone before everyone gets up, when everyone goes to bed or take the family with you…whatever works for you and the family.

■ Take daily walks whether you are working out or not. This is what I do when I can’t find a gym or when I just need to burn some extra calories. Don’t laugh but I’ve lost weight on some vacations because of my walks each and every morning. Again, this can be fun for everyone. Walk to your locations if they are close enough to do so.

■ Partake in fun, calorie and/or fat burning activities. Most of the time there are fun things to do while away – DO THEM! Be a kid with the kids and you’ll be amazed that you don’t only feel good about moving but you feel good overall.

■ Find salad bars or have a salad first to fill you up a bit. This is fine for the kids too, or some fruit.

Do your best to have some healthy meals!

There are so many more that I will be happy to share another time. I hope this holds you over until then. These are some of the things I do to maintain a healthier lifestyle while on vacation.

If you have any other suggestions and would like to share what you do while on vacation to stay hit and healthy let me know.
